Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on undesired presents can be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based art dealer. A date has not been finalized, but the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds going to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts are said to be locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.

The detailed catalog has not yet been disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and positioning Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a distinct method to handle the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
