Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who fled after the incident was apprehended shortly later. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location displayed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
