Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
If Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
