Israelis observe two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate familiar with the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The official said the morning session finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Future governance of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until every captive are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do any agreement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.
"We are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
