Kenya's Police Officer Fatally Wounded in Archery Assault at Gate of President's Residence
A Kenyan police officer assigned to one of the entrances of the president's official residence in the capital city has died after being hit with an arrow, police reported.
Authorities stated that on Monday's early hours, a 56-year-old man, equipped with a archery equipment, came near guards at the presidential residence entrance and was commanded to disarm. Rather, he advanced and fired at PC Ramadhan Matanka in the upper torso.
The officer was immediately taken to health center but passed away during treatment, as per a official police report.
This incident has raised questions about potential security breaches as State House is one of Kenya's most heavily guarded premises.
The constable's body is now in a morgue and there will be a medical examination soon.
A probe is also in progress to determine the reason for the attack.
Kenyan press are reporting that the fallen constable had been among those checking automobiles entering the official residence.
The alleged attacker, who had allegedly concealed his identity as a homeless person carrying a sack hiding the implements, was detained following the incident.
Recorded video, released by local TV station subsequently on Monday, showed a restrained individual with apparent wounds. He was in a official transport and was reportedly being rushed to treatment.
The man is scheduled to appear in legal proceedings on Tuesday, Kenyan news are stating.
"The police force denounces this atrocious incident and commends the personnel for their swift response, which stopped more injuries," law enforcement spokesman Muchiri Nyaga commented.
The official expressed sympathy to the relatives of the deceased officer, mentioning that the constable had "made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty".
