21st Minute: Fierce Play as Both Teams Battle
21 mins: Brisbane push forward to halfway and almost break through the defensive line via Walsh and Shibasaki on the left flank. Another excellent kick from Reynolds on the final play maintains the Broncos' momentum. Over three plays they remain in control, but some quick passes free the rapid Jahrome Hughes, and as he's tackled on the 40-meter line, a six-again is given for holding the player. Melbourne are finding their flow, and William Warbrick breaks through the defense, followed by Xavier Coates making a sprint – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder! Could that be a yellow card? Not according to the referee, rules Grant Atkins, because the winger was buckling. Walsh is placed on report regardless, and Melbourne continue their onslaught.
19th Minute: Munster Leads Storm Attack
19th minute: Munster is busy as the Storm charge at speed down to their 30-meter line. On the right side, Hughes kicks high, Eliesa Katoa rushes up, but in the marking contest, the forward knocks on, and the Broncos at last get a breather.
18th Minute: Melbourne Apply Force on Brisbane
18th minute: The Storm perform a textbook restart set and put plenty of force on Mariner with the final kick. Again, the Broncos struggle to advance near halfway in response, and Reynolds is forced to kick long to keep his team in touch.
17th Minute: Setback for Storm
17 mins: There's a setback for the Storm. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin injury. Tyran Wishart is entering in his position.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, just brilliant. Following consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are tiring. From tackle three near the try line on the left side, the Storm send the ball infield for two passes before Hughes kicks it off the ground and the charging Katoa times his charge to perfection to dive on the loose ball and stand to mark his side's second touchdown!
From just to the right of the uprights, Nick Meaney kicks his second goal.
12th Minute: Storm Display Thrilling Offense
12th minute: The Storm appear thrilling in attack. There’s speed from the play-the-ball, power from the pack, and sharp passing from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a kick high to the left corner that is dropped by Walsh and leads to a infringement to the Melbourne for an escort on Coates. Melbourne decline the two points and get to work near the goalposts. There’s a six again – and another – as Munster weaves side to side.
10 mins: Tense Action
10 mins: Stefano Utoikamanu has lived up to his word from the start and his run from the restart allows first Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to snipe from dummy-half. Jahrome Hughes kicks from 40 meters and Walsh catches the high kick on his 10-meter line. Brisbane show reduced thrust in this set and get lucky on the final play when Hunt’s pass to Reynolds is dropped. Fortunately, the veteran halfback kicks superbly to turn Coates around and forces the Melbourne wing to run from his in-goal. The Broncos are too eager with their chase, catching the winger with a high tackle, and Melbourne can kick for favorable territory.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 6-6 Brisbane (Meaney, 8)
After the scrum, Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Then, from fast play from the play-the-ball, every key Storm player get a touch as they catch and pass out to the right edge until Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at serious pace, and breaks through a weak tackle line to dive over for an instant reply!
The centre dusts himself down to kick the goal. It's a tied game!
7 mins: Both Sides Trade Possession
7th minute: Both sides exchange conservative sets either side of halfway, but then the Brisbane attempt to attack on their left, only to be unable to find Gehamat Shibasaki with the pass. William Warbrick rushes up and forces a knock on for his troubles.
5 mins: Ideal Opening for Brisbane
5 mins: That is the perfect beginning for Brisbane, taking the lead before Melbourne have even handled the ball, in an offensive play led by both Haas and Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at the referee blowing such an early penalty, but they were clearly breached by the blistering Brisbane offense.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 0-6 Broncos (Deine Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, the Broncos begin their attack. Melbourne concede a six-again for offside, and in no time the ball is in the red zone. Where is Walsh? Lurking on the right side, attracting Jack Howarth, holding his position, then someway passing to Mariner on his wing. The outside back cuts infield, reaches the line, then just, only just remains in the playing area as he runs around to score beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds kicks the goal, but the Bunker confirms the referee's call. The venue is rocking to the sound of ecstatic fans.
2 mins: Quick Penalty
2nd minute: Corey Jensen, not Payne Haas, makes the first hit-up of the night and Melbourne are quick to tackle… but just three tackles later the Storm give away the first penalty of the night for Grant impeding Payne Haas on the ground. Brisbane right away in offensive mode.
