New Year Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Go Ahead Despite Warnings
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be low, meaning additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Set to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Alerts Activated
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this meant the weather could to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
