Poland Activates Fighter Aircraft as Russian forces Targets Ukrainian regions near Poland
Russia attacked Ukrainian territory with aerial assaults overnight on Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday, focusing on the major western city of Lviv region.
Neighboring country Polish authorities deployed combat aircraft to ensure the security of their national airspace, the Polish military confirmed. NATO partner planes were also deployed.
Regional governor local authorities said two people were killed in attacks in the region, and two more injured.
In other developments, Russia once more struck Ukraine's power plants - and one was struck in an overnight attack on Zaporizhzhia, where the city official reported one person lost their life and over seventy-three thousand residents were without electricity.
Military Response
The Russian assaults came days after a US official said the United States would endorse Ukraine launching deep strikes inside Russian territory.
"Our and partner nations' jets are active in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," Poland's operational command said.
At 05:10, all of Ukraine was placed on high alert following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of incoming aerial threats.
Infrastructure Damage
Russia has intensified its attacks on the country's power grid.
The city's administration local officials reported part of the city - 43 miles from the Polish frontier - had lost electricity, adding that the local anti-aircraft units were engaged heavily in countering first a UAV and then a Russian missile attack.
As of morning hours, multiple areas were left without power and public transport was yet to start running, with Sadovyi stressing that it was "unsafe to go out into the streets".
In the Zaporizhzhia area, the nocturnal assault left "more than 73,000 consumers... without electricity", according to Ivan Fedorov.
An individual was fatally wounded, and nine others hurt, authorities confirmed.
A teenage female was one of those receiving medical assistance, officials noted, releasing images depicting a partly destroyed multi-storey block and a destroyed vehicle from the impact location.
Wider Consequences
Municipal transit in Ivano-Frankivsk, would "start running later than usual" on Sunday, its city administration announced.
The multiple strikes were part of Moscow's offensive against the whole of Ukraine during the night.
At around 06:00, Ukraine's Air Force warned the entire territory was facing danger of fresh Russian missile attacks, following hours of air raid alerts and warnings of aerial assaults.
Territorial Control
Russian forces have taken control of most of the Donbas area, including Luhansk and Donetsk.
Russia presently holds around a fifth of Ukraine's land, including the Crimean peninsula, which it annexed in 2014.
Global Developments
In Russia, air defence units destroyed multiple UAVs overnight, news agencies reported on Sunday morning.
Recently, a American diplomat indicated that the United States would back Ukraine launching deep strikes inside Russian territories.
Meanwhile, a different NATO country - the Baltic nation - had to suspend flights temporarily after unidentified items were detected.
Lithuania suspended flights at its largest and busiest international airport for multiple hours, before reopening it at 04:50 on Sunday.
The airport's operator stated the flight suspensions and reroutings were "because of a possible series of aerial objects heading toward the aviation facility".
