Suspected Harasser Questioned: 'But Suppose I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman charged with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly left her a recorded message which posed: "suppose I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, 24, who court testimony revealed has persistently claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial accused with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court was told communication data and data obtained from phones logged Ms Wandelt persistently asking Madeleine's mother for a DNA test throughout the past two years.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is considered the most publicized child disappearance cases and is still unsolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
A separate recorded message, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt declaring: "I realize I'm fat and not pretty like Madeleine used to be, but I know what I believe."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's voicemail stated: "Imagine there is a slight possibility that I'm her? What happens next? Isn't that important for you?"
"I do not need money, I possess a living here in Poland, I only wish to understand," the recording stated.
The jury was informed that by means of electronic messages, text messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a biological test, forwarded early photographs to her phone in a effort to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "recollections" from a youth with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with law enforcement who collated the evidence, informed the court there "showed no any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt additionally communicated with close associates of the McCanns, based on the call data.
On 9 October 2024, Gerry McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "a wrong number."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a message on Mrs McCann's voicemail stating "I will continue and I intend to demonstrate my point."
The court heard Mrs Spragg struck up a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt preceding assisting her on a visit to the McCanns' home in the county in December 2024.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the months preceding the appearance to Rothley, that area, in December 2024.
The court was told correspondence between the two individuals, in that autumn, planning attempting to get Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her bins or from silverware at a eating establishment.
"We must make a stand," Mrs Spragg advised Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the trip to their house, Mrs Spragg transmitted a communication which stated: "We find ourselves sat outside the McCanns' home with our lights out like private investigators. I had hoped to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be doing that with the McCanns."
