Rock Climbing in the Peak District

Even complete novices will quickly be scaling sheltered Peak District crags on this weekend course. Participants will master tying in, safety techniques and a range of methods of ascent, along with abseiling down. Limited to six participants to each tutor, there is plenty of personalized coaching and personalised targets. The training is open to anyone aged 13 and over, from absolute beginners to those with a bit of indoor experience. It is day-only course, but there is a list of suggested, budget-friendly places to stay close by, such as campsites, hostels, B&Bs and inns. The venue is a brief walk from Bamford railway station, located on the Hope Valley line from Manchester to Sheffield.

Non-Representational Art in Andalucía

This historic hillside village, a ancient white village in southern Spain, about a short drive from Granada, is the breathtaking location for this art retreat. Painters of every skill level – including beginners – will discover how to plan and create modern art. A portion of the time will be spent outdoors, working on structured activities en plein air. These initial sketches and paintings will then be expanded upon in the studio, with participants completing a number of interpretive scenes in acrylics to be exhibited in the village. The group has sole use of the venue, which is centered on an open courtyard and has a sun terrace with panoramic vistas over the hills. The price includes five days of art instruction; all meals; and an excursion to the nearby fortress and other local sights.

Vegetarian Culinary in the Algarve

This Mediterranean culinary holiday, located at a riverside villa in the inland Portuguese region, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Participants will master the art of meze spreads, attend a hands-on falafel session, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. The schedule includes visits to the local market and a local vineyard to taste local vintages, plus free time for walks by the Funcho River, to unwind on the terrace or swim in the infinity pool. The farmhouse, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, as well as glamping tents in the gardens.

Maritime Singing Break in St Ives

This coastal town is the ideal spot for a maritime music retreat. Guests will learn historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and try their hand at writing their own. There will be voice exercises, breathing exercises, performance tips and a closing performance. The holiday is based at a rural hotel with views of the bay. Full board are included, such as a Cornish cream tea on the first day, breakfast options, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not included. Author and tutor Greg Mosse conducts the daily workshops on this writing retreat. He explores topics including plot, characters, setting and tension, to submitting work to agents. The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a wide range of courses on sustainability: from creating habitats to making pallet furniture. This weekend introduction will help attendees get to grips with the fundamentals of apiary management, explore the life cycle of bees and discover their environmental benefits. It is aimed at produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. The weekend is also a chance to relax in the centre's sustainably managed woodlands, which are home to polecats, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and rare birds.
