The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle during next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background Behind the Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid political signage with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
- This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of championing equality.
- A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork celebrating the event.
- Planners are committed to ensuring all fans are welcomed in the city during the 48-team competition.
The region hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
