The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

Editor's Note: The following contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
