The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
